Pass the (almond) milk and cookies, Chrissy is here! Lots of you have asked us how we do the holidays healthily at GMB, well here's how we tackle the best part: dessert!
No need to labour in the kitchen with these ready-made wholefood biscuits. Whether you’re after something that’s crunchy, chewy or cake-like, gluten free or vegan – we’ve got a biccie for everybody here.
If you can’t find the one you’re after in the health food aisle, head to your local health food store.
Like a wholefood snack bar, but moulded into a cookie-shape, this biccie ticks so many boxes: it’s gluten free, wheat free and vegan, and has no artificial nasties. We love that Kez’s is an Aussie, family-owned business, with their Free & Naked range being all about real ingredients that taste awesome.
While your typical cookie from the supermarket relies on refined wheat flour and sugar for the base ingredients, Kez’s Raw Choc Nut Cookie is made from peanuts, cashews and almonds, bound together with fibre and magnesium-rich dates – nature’s sweetener.
No nasty vegetable oils or trans (hardened) fats from margarine in here either; Kez's use coconut oil instead, for added moisture and beneficial fats. With five cookies per pack, these are perfect for sharing with your loved ones these holidays.
The brainchild of lawyer Fran, and Nutritionist and Naturopath Jo, these two mums know how hard it can be to get good nutrition in when you’re pregnant or a new mum. Enter Franjos, bringing mums and mums-to-be wholesome biscuits to support the stage that they’re at.
The ‘secret’ ingredients in Franjos’ Choc Chip (!) or Fig and Almond Lactation Cookies are oats, brewers yeast and flaxseeds; these naturally contain ‘galactagogues’, substances that can help increase milk supply. Combined with sustaining and nourishing ingredients like buckwheat flour, chia seeds and coconut oil, lactation cookies also help keep high energy-burning mums going…a great snack to grab for a middle-of- the-night feed!
Not just for mums! Family-friendly too, anyone can enjoy a Franjo cookie. And with gluten free varieties available, no one has to miss out!
A cookie that you’ll feel better for eating, Kookas makes quality and wholesome ingredients a priority, while never compromising on taste, texture or appearance. From the same makers as Franjo, Kookas was created to fill the gap in the market for egg and dairy free biscuits.
With humble beginnings at the farmers markets, Kookas has now made their way into health food stores. We love that they use wholemeal spelt flour for an easier-to-digest biccie base…and how about these flavours?!: Choose from Cacao Macadamia, Choc Goji or Oat Coconut.
There’s also a gluten free variety – Orange Hazelnut – with a subtly sweet hazelnut meal base, rich in heart-healthy monounsaturated fats.
Not a crunchy cookie, expect a softer texture that’s kind of a cross between a cake and a biscuit in consistency. Perfect for the teeth of little ones and older ones, and for everyone in between!
Take a bite and you won’t believe these babies are grain, gluten and dairy free! Rumbles combine wholefood ingredients that taste as good – if not better – than highly processed commercial biscuits. In Rumbles Cookies you’ll find ingredients that you’d keep in your pantry - like nut butter, almond meal, coconut and seeds, and a touch of honey or maple syrup for sweetness.
Our pick is the Maple Pecan; with only 3g of sugar (less than a teaspoon!) in a decently sized cookie, it’s a biccie you could eat for breakkie!
And for a nut free, lunchbox-friendly option, Rumbles has joined forces with Pete Evans to create the Chindii Cookie. Soft and chewy, this one is packed with seeds, coconut, coconut oil and free range egg – plus a little honey, cinnamon and ginger for a bit of a kick.
