As the old Indian saying goes, ‘There’s no tincture without ginger’. Here are four reasons why we love this zingy, zesty spice.
1. It’s good for your gut
Because it can aid gastric motility (i.e. the pushing of food and waste down the digestive tract), ginger may help alleviate a range of digestive complaints, like gas, bloating, constipation or diarrhoea. If your gut is feeling a bit off, try sipping on a soothing, homemade ginger drink: Cut some fresh ginger into chunks and steep in a mug of boiling water, adding lemon and honey to taste.
2. It’s the perfect travel companion
Not all stomachs are made of steel, and for some of us, a few bumps on the bus and we’re queasy. I never go on a holiday without The Ginger People’s Gin Gins Chewy Ginger Candies or Gin Gins Super (from health food stores) in my handbag and suitcase; Great for rocky boat trips too. If you’re prone to motion sickness, keep some ginger lollies on hand…They might settle your stomach and are also just delicious – Sort of like a caramel with a spicy kick.
3. It will warm you up
Used for its warming properties in ancient Indian Ayurvedic medicine, earthy ginger is an ideal herb for the winter, especially if you’re feeling under the weather. Add finely chopped ginger to stir fries and soups, or for a Japanese-inspired salad, toss pickled or minced ginger through a bowl of greens; I love pickled ginger in a tofu or tuna salad topped with avocado, a squeeze of lemon juice and a drizzle of tahini. Or if you’re feeling fancy, treat yourself with a teaspoon or two of The Ginger People’s Organic Ginger Syrup (from any good health food store) in a mug of black tea…It’s like comfort in a cup.
4. It’s delicious! (And might encourage you to eat healthier)
Because of its complex flavour profile, ginger works well in both sweet and savoury dishes, also reducing the need for adding extra salt or sugar to your meal. Shake some ground dried ginger and cinnamon on your morning porridge for the perfect balance of sweet and spicy, or liven up roast veggies or steamed rice with a sprinkle of the fresh stuff.
