The Top Five Superfoods to Keep in your Kitchen This Year
Superfoods, the must-have in the nutrition toolkit if you are seeking optimal wellbeing and to nourish the body from the inside out. What better way to kick off your health goals than by stocking your fridge and pantry with the top superfoods for 2016?
As part of Blackmores’ partnership with the Australian Open, we spoke with Australian media personality and Blackmores Australian Open ambassador, Rachael Finch, who is encouraging Australians to take stock of their wellbeing, by assessing their health with the Blackmores Wellbeing Check, pledge their wellbeing goals for 2016 with #IWillBe on social media.
Here are her must-have items to keep in your kitchen this year:
This soft green fruit is not very sweet and has a unique texture, leading to it being considered an acquired taste. Perfect in salads, as a dip or as a spread on toast as a replacement for butter or margarine, raw avocado contain no cholesterol and lots of vitamins and minerals to help keep you healthy.
I absolutely LOVE salmon – in fact my favourite meal (it’s quite boring!) is just a nice piece of oven roasted salmon with sweet potato and steamed greens. Salmon is an excellent source of vitamin B12, vitamin D, and selenium. It’s also full of omega-3 fatty acids and protein which keeps you fuller for longer!
I love having a cold-pressed juice in the morning, filled with tonnes of vegetables and dark leafy greens – it’s such an amazing way to get your daily dose of nutrients. Lately I’ve also been adding the new Blackmores Vitality Super Greens into my morning juice. Kale in particular is amazing in a juice; its dark green leaves even look super healthy, so it's no surprise they contain high levels of many beneficial nutrients such as iron and vitamin C. Any dark leafy greens do the trick and are a must – think spinach, rocket, silver beet – I try to get them into at least two of my meals every day.
Not really a superfood as such, but I love the refreshing and thirst-quenching taste of sparking water, and sparkling water is actually a really underrated supplement. I stock my fridge with San Pellegrino which contains minerals including sulphate, magnesium and other trace minerals. Because it tastes delicious too, it helps to boost my daily water intake!
Not all superfoods are recent arrivals to our health food stores and supermarkets. We've all grown up with broccoli on our plates, and sometimes wished it wasn't there. Knowing what we know now about broccoli, this attitude has changed, and our fantastic ways of preparing it today are a far cry from the overcooked methods of yesteryear. Its bacterial fighting properties and high Vitamin K content make broccoli one of our most important superfoods.
The Blackmores Superfoods range is another really great way of adding a little nutrient boost into your daily meals – and they are super cost-effective too! Available in a convenient powdered form, they can be easily added to any type of smoothie, yoghurt or bircher to help boost your daily nutrient intake in a way that’s accessible anytime, anywhere. You can even use them to make your own healthy and nutritionally boosted ice pops!
