My Three-Step Toxin-free Beauty Routine
By GMB Founder, Peta Shulman
Since you’re reading the GMB blog, I know you’re all about pouring goodness into your body – but what about on it? Our skin is like a sponge. It absorbs up to 70 per cent of what we put on it, so it’s definitely worth getting glowy the natural way. That doesn’t mean ditching your shower, skincare and makeup products forever. Far from it! These days, there are plenty of lush beauty products that are free from nasties, but just as hard-working. There’s never been a better time to go au naturel!
Here’s the toxin-free beauty routine I treat my skin (and myself!) to every day.
1. Shower power
Showering is one of my favourite rituals. I use it as a time to reflect (and daydream about the next GoodnessMe Box, of course), all while slathering my skin in deliciously hydrating and nourishing products.
Before I hop in, I sometimes use a dry body brush to ramp up my circulation. Then, I lather up with a natural body wash and soap like Dr Bronner’s Liquid Body Soap. The subtle almond scent is amazing. Once a month to treat myself, I do an all-over body exfoliation with a coffee scrub. It smooths and refines skin, leaving it incredibly soft – and the smell is the only wake-up you need in the morning!
I use a natural face cleanser by Natura Siberica. I also wash my hair with a natural shampoo and conditioner, Hello Hair is my current go-to, and allow it to air-dry whenever I can.
2. Hydration station
Our body craves water, which is why it’s so important to drink at least two litres a day and put some moisture back into it with the help of hydrating products. I’m a big fan of oils. I use coconut oil on my body – not only does it soak into your skin and keep it hydrated for hours, but it leaves you smelling like a tropical holiday. Delish. On the days I’ve washed my hair, I’ll run a tiny bit of coconut oil through the ends as a leave-in treatment. A little goes a long way.
3. Magic make-up
Once I’ve given my skincare a few minutes to absorb, I turn my attention to make-up. I’ve tested a ton of natural, organic and mineral make-up products, and I’ve been so impressed with the quality. Like I said, there’s no better time to go down the natural route than right now. If you haven’t switched to toxin-free make-up yet, start slowly. Swap out one product at a time until you have a kit that’s not only free from chemicals and nasty ingredients, but is actually good for your skin.
My everyday look is quite simple. I apply a natural tinted moisturiser to add a flush of colour and even out my skin tone while keeping it hydrated throughout the day. The Dusty Girl Earth Cream is my current go-to. It’s buildable, and contains a range of oils to nourish, repair and soothe. Who doesn’t love a multi-tasker? I’ll then brush my brows, apply mascara, dab a little blush or illuminator on my cheeks, and smooth on a lip balm.
If I’m going out, I’ll opt for a natural mineral foundation powder. Dusty Girl's powder does such a great job at providing even coverage without looking cakey, oily or clogged by chemical ingredients. The best part, it makes my skin feel so smooth and soft. For the best result, the right tools are key. I use a soft yet dense kabuki brush (try the Dusty Girl Kabuki Brush). Swirl the brush in the product, then apply in circular motions to the face until you get the coverage you want. I usually finish off my look with a slick of eyeliner (I like a creamy white pencil), or a neutral lipstick.
When it’s time to take it all off, I turn to my trusty coconut oil. I massage it in to dissolve make-up, then cleanse and moisturise.
