4 Gluten-Free Porridges That'll Transform Your Breakfast

Carbohydrates in the form of glucose, is the body's preferred source of fuel. That is, the body works to break down carbohydrates quicker than any other macro nutrient to use as energy. Not having enough of the right type of carbohydrates in your diet can lead to feelings of fatigue, hunger, moodiness and low energy.

Ensuring your fueling your body with plenty of unrefined wholegrains is a sure way to ensure you're getting enough carbs in throughout the day, starting with breakfast! But for those who follow a gluten-free diet, you may find yourself struggling to find gluten-friendly breakfast options (especially heading into winter where we tend to crave more warming foods such as oatmeal porridge).

Traditional porridge made from oats comes with a plethora of health benefits (we're talking fibre and cholesterol-lowering properties, just to name a few). So, for those who follow a gluten-free diet and don't want to miss out on the goodness of a warm bowl of porridge for breakfast, consider this your guide to some equally great options that you can enjoy instead!

1. Teff Tribe Porridge

Did you know that teff is smallest seed in the world? And arguably, the most nutrient-dense? Yep! It's naturally gluten-free, low GI and supercharged with all the good stuff – like iron, protein, calcium and other essential minerals. Teff also contains resistant starches which helps improve gut health by feeding good bacteria and also helps maintain blood sugar levels.

Originating in Ethiopia, teff thrives in hot climates, which means Australia's outback is perfect to help this little grain flourish. It's about the size of a poppy seed and grows in a range of colours, all of which offer the same health benefits but slightly different flavours. Nutty in flavour, teff is cooked in a similar way to quinoa and when heated with liquid, has the same texture and consistency as porridge. Keen to give it a go? You'll find Teff Tribe in the June Brainfood Box!

2. Orgran Quinoa Porridge
